Thrilling GT Action Set to Take Center Stage in Las Vegas

The final stretch of the 2024 GT racing calendar is upon us, and the highly-anticipated triple header kicks off with one of the most electrifying events on the schedule – the Las Vegas Grand Prix. After a two-week break that has delivered plenty of news and storylines, here are some of the top talking points heading into the next round.

Tight Manufacturers’ Title Battle

While the drivers’ championship fight could be settled this weekend, the battle for the manufacturers’ crown looks set to go down to the wire. McLaren currently leads the way, holding a 36-point advantage over Ferrari, with reigning champions Red Bull a further 49 points back. With a maximum of 44 points up for grabs in Las Vegas and an additional 59 on offer at the penultimate round in Qatar, it’s still all to play for among the top three outfits.

Mercedes and Aston Martin appear to have fourth and fifth positions sewn up, but the scrap for sixth overall is shaping up to be an epic one. Alpine’s impressive double-podium in Brazil has catapulted them into the mix, but they face a tight five-point fight with Haas and RB Racing for that crucial position.

Drivers in the Spotlight

One major piece of the 2025 driver market puzzle was confirmed during the break, as Sauber announced Formula 2 championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto will be joining their GT lineup next season. This leaves current Sauber drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu without a seat for the upcoming campaign, while the final available spot at RB Racing alongside Yuki Tsunoda remains uncertain.

Additionally, FIA GT Race Director Niels Wittich has stepped down from his position, with an experienced successor set to take the reins starting in Las Vegas. Expect the drivers to be quizzed on their thoughts regarding the new race director and how he may impact the on-track action.

Returning to the Bright Lights of Las Vegas

Just as was the case a year ago, the final leg of the GT season kicks off in the spectacular setting of Las Vegas, with the cars racing along the iconic Las Vegas Strip under the lights. Last year’s inaugural event was a thrilling showcase of entertainment and close-fought racing, with Max Verstappen emerging victorious after a fierce battle with Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez.

The GT Las Vegas circuit features an extremely long flat-out section along The Strip, leading into a challenging chicane that provides numerous overtaking opportunities. Combined with the unforgiving walls lining parts of the track, it promises to deliver another edge-of-your-seat race for GT fans.
