Aston Martin Pursues Legendary F1 Designer Adrian Newey Amid Red Bull Departure
(Motorsport News) – Adrian Newey, the renowned Chief Technical Officer at Red Bull Racing, has revealed that he plans to make a decision on his next move in Formula 1 this winter. Newey, who is considered the most celebrated designer in the sport, has hinted that he intends to continue his career in F1 beyond his tenure at Red Bull.
The British engineer has been linked with a potential move to Ferrari, with rumors suggesting a “Super Consultant” role may have been agreed upon. However, Aston Martin is also actively courting Newey’s prized signature, and the team is reportedly eager to have an answer from him this week.
When asked about his future plans, Newey told Sky Sports F1:
“I don’t know. At the moment, I’m just kind of still working on the RB17 [Red Bull hypercar], and then just taking some time off.”
Newey recently took a week off and enjoyed a road trip along the South Coast of the UK in an old Aston Martin DB6, suggesting the British marque may have caught his interest.
Aston Martin’s boss, Mike Krack, has acknowledged the team’s interest in Newey, stating that they were “flattered” to be named as a potential destination for the renowned designer, alongside Ferrari. Furthermore, Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll, the son of team owner Lawrence Stroll, expressed his enthusiasm at the prospect of having Newey on board, describing him as the “GOAT” (Greatest of All Time) in the paddock.
Aston Martin has been identified as Red Bull’s closest challenger in the early stages of the 2023 Formula 1 season, but the team’s competitiveness has slipped as the development race intensified. The Silverstone-based squad has continued to face challenges with its AMR24 car, which has become increasingly difficult to drive.
In an effort to transform Aston Martin into a title contender, the team has announced the appointment of former Mercedes boss Andy Cowell as CEO from October. Furthermore, reports in the Italian media suggest that Lawrence Stroll has been successful in signing Ferrari Technical Director Enrico Cardile to join Aston Martin.
The pursuit of Adrian Newey, a legendary figure in Formula 1 engineering, underscores Aston Martin’s ambitions to establish itself as a top-tier team capable of challenging for championships. The outcome of Newey’s decision will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the team’s future in the sport.
