Dakar Rally: Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin Triumphs in Wild Milwaukee IndyCar Race
In an exhilarating turn of events, Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin stormed to his third victory of the 2023 IndyCar season in the second race of the double-header weekend at Milwaukee.
Starting from the second position, the 31-year-old New Zealander was thrust into the lead after an early crash for his pole-sitting team-mate Josef Newgarden. McLaughlin remained a contender throughout the arduous 250-lap contest, which featured an intense and late side-by-side battle with Colton Herta to secure the top spot.
“That was the most fun race I’ve had in IndyCar,” an elated McLaughlin proclaimed. “That was a blast. So happy for everyone on the Gallagher Chevy, we just stuck with it.”
Despite a late-race restart and pressure from a charging Scott Dixon, McLaughlin held firm to cross the finish line 0.4558 seconds ahead of his fellow countryman. Herta, who led for 43 laps, finished third, while AJ Foyt Racing’s Santino Ferrucci grabbed fourth to match his result from Saturday’s encounter.
The margin between title contenders Alex Palou and Will Power narrowed slightly to 33 points heading into the season finale in two weeks, as both drivers encountered trouble during the race. Palou’s woes began before the race even started, with a battery issue leaving him multiple laps down, while Power slipped on a restart and fell a lap behind before fighting back to finish 10th.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Marcus Ericsson and Alexander Rossi completed the top six, showcasing the depth of talent in the 2023 IndyCar championship.
