Dakar Rally News: Russell Supports Rookie Sprint Race Proposal, Verstappen Unconvinced
Monza, Italy – In the world of motorsports, the idea of a dedicated sprint race for rookie Formula 1 drivers has been a topic of discussion, and Mercedes driver George Russell has lent his support to the proposal.
The F1 Commission is set to discuss the concept at the end of September, with the suggestion being to host a televised race for drivers who have competed in two or fewer Grands Prix, following the annual tyre test in Abu Dhabi after the season-ending race.
Russell, who is also a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, expressed his approval for the idea, noting the challenges young drivers face during the limited FP1 sessions they are allocated each year. > “I actually quite like the idea, to be honest,” he said. “An opportunity for rookie drivers to do a full day of testing, then straight into a sprint race weekend. I think it’s a good idea.”
However, not everyone shares Russell’s enthusiasm. Max Verstappen, the reigning World Champion from Red Bull, was less convinced, particularly questioning the timing of the proposed event at the end of the long modern F1 calendar. > “I don’t think everyone is excited after the final race. Then to do another race on Tuesday… I mean, if you want to give rookies a chance, just put them in the car.”
The complexities involved in organising such an event for 2024 from a logistical standpoint mean that the rookie sprint race is viewed as more of a long-term ambition, according to sources at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. However, the idea has garnered support from various F1 stakeholders, including the teams, and will be a point of discussion at the upcoming F1 Commission meeting.
As the sport continues to explore ways to provide more opportunities for young drivers, the proposed rookie sprint race has become a topic of debate within the paddock, with differing views from the sport’s established stars.
