British GT News: Robert Kubica Reflects on Rallying Passion, But Focuses on Sportscar Racing Future

In a revealing interview, former Formula 1 race winner and current AF Corse Ferrari Hypercar driver Robert Kubica has expressed his lingering affection for the World Rally Championship (WRC), while confirming that any potential return to the discipline would be for “fun” rather than competition.

Kubica, who has been a prominent figure in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) since 2021, has maintained a close watch on the WRC, having competed in the series from 2013 to 2016. The Pole won the WRC2 championship in 2013 and recorded 14 stage wins in the top class over the next two seasons, including a best result of sixth in Argentina in 2014.

“Honestly, I miss rallies a bit. I’m a big fan of them,” Kubica told Motorsport.com. “But now I have my own things to do in my racing programme, so since I stopped rallying in early 2016, I see the rallies more from a fan perspective, a supporter.”

While the 12-time F1 podium finisher acknowledged the allure of returning to the WRC, he emphasized that any such move would be purely for enjoyment rather than a return to competitive action. “If [a return] could be a bit of fun, then yes, but not in the spirit of competition,” he said.

Kubica’s focus remains firmly on his WEC commitments, where he has witnessed firsthand the recent surge in manufacturer interest, with nine marques now represented in the Hypercar/LMDh class. This resurgence has led the Pole to hope for a similar boom in the WRC, though he recognizes the challenges involved.

“It’s a complex topic and it will require the involvement of different parties,” Kubica explained. “I still think that rallies offer something special, especially from a fan’s perspective. In the WEC, there has been a big boost in manufacturers in the last two years and the level has gone massively up. Manufacturers are attracting other manufacturers, and this is what rallying has struggled to achieve.”

As Kubica prepares for the WEC’s upcoming round in Brazil, his passion for rallying remains undiminished, but his future lies in the burgeoning sportscar racing scene, where he continues to make a significant impact.
