Horner Backs Perez Despite Nightmare Mexico Outing

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has insisted the team has done all it can to support struggling Sergio Perez after a calamitous home race weekend in Mexico City.

Perez, who was looking to capitalize on his local knowledge, was eliminated in Q1, received a time penalty for an incorrect grid positioning, and later collided with Red Bull junior driver Liam Lawson, resulting in floor damage that hampered his race.

Addressing the Mexican driver’s struggles, Horner acknowledged,

“Checo has had a horrible weekend. Nothing has gone right for him this weekend. He knows Formula 1 is a results-based business, and when you’re not delivering, the spotlight is firmly on you.”

Despite the mounting pressure on Perez, Horner reaffirmed the team’s commitment to supporting him, saying,

“From the team’s perspective, we’re working with him as hard as we can to try to support him. We’ve done everything that we can to support Checo and will continue to do so in Brazil next weekend.”

However, Horner also hinted that the team may need to consider its options for 2025, acknowledging,

“There comes a point in time that difficult decisions have to be made.”

The incident between Perez and Lawson, who is in the running for Perez’s seat, further complicated the weekend. While Perez was furious with Lawson’s aggressive driving, Horner did not take sides, stating,

“That’s racing. We saw a lot of tough racing out there.”

With Red Bull now third in the constructors’ standings, Horner emphasized the team’s determination to regain a winning position, but admitted it would be a “tall order” over the remaining four races.

As the season nears its conclusion, all eyes will be on Perez’s performance in the upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix, where he will look to turn his fortunes around and secure his place at Red Bull for the future.
