Verstappen’s Thrilling Comeback Triumph in Sao Paulo
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner was overjoyed following Max Verstappen’s remarkable recovery drive from 17th to 1st at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The Dutchman’s impressive performance has significantly swung the championship battle in his favor.
Verstappen qualified in 12th position after being unable to set a fast lap in Q2 due to a late red flag, and was then further demoted down the grid with a five-place penalty for an engine change. However, the reigning world champion demonstrated his exceptional skills in the rain-affected, incident-filled race, storming through the field to reclaim points-scoring positions.
“It was a masterclass from Max,” Horner praised. “In difficult conditions on a very dreary day, he shone very brightly. To come from 17th on the grid, to have the patience, but also the attacking, was beyond our wildest dreams this morning.”
A timely red flag allowed Red Bull to change Verstappen’s tires without losing any time, and he went on to pass leader Esteban Ocon before building an unassailable lead, ultimately taking the victory by a margin of 19.477 seconds and also claiming the additional point for the fastest lap.
Verstappen’s eighth Grand Prix triumph of the 2024 season has extended his lead in the drivers’ standings to 62 points over Lando Norris, making it highly unlikely that the McLaren driver can close the gap in the remaining three race weekends, though it remains mathematically possible.
While Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez struggled to recover enough positions on the slippery track, the team’s constructors’ championship hopes remain alive, with McLaren still leading Ferrari and Red Bull in the standings.
Horner praised the hard work at the team’s Milton Keynes headquarters, saying, “We’ve had a difficult patch but everybody’s worked hard to get back into a winning position. That’s what we’ve done today, and Max used the car to full advantage.”
Verstappen’s incredible drive in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix has once again demonstrated his ability to excel in challenging conditions, further cementing his status as a dominant force in the world of Dakar Rally.
