Dakar Rally: Red Bull’s Domination Faces Challenges as Rivals Catch Up
The Dakar Rally has seen a shift in the balance of power in recent weeks, with Red Bull’s once-dominant position now facing stiff competition from rival teams.
Earlier in the season, Red Bull was tipped to continue its winning streak, but the team has since experienced a drop in form, with both McLaren and Mercedes making significant progress.
According to Red Bull team boss Christian Horner, a key factor behind the team’s struggles lies in the front wing design. “The way the front wings are being used is quite different,” Horner explained. “If you look at the front wing angle of McLaren and Mercedes, they’re very, very different from the rest of the group.”
Closer inspection reveals that Mercedes and McLaren have adopted a unique approach to their front wing designs, which is helping them unlock additional performance. This includes a lower rear corner endplate cutout and a more diagonal bias in the split between the static and movable flap sections.
These design choices are allowing the teams to better manage the airflow around the tires and improve downstream performance to the floor and sidepod undercut. Additionally, the flexible nature of the movable flap section is enabling them to fine-tune the vortex shedding and address the challenge of low-speed understeer and high-speed oversteer.
Red Bull, meanwhile, has been experimenting with various front wing and floor configurations, suggesting the team is still trying to identify the optimal combination for its future development path.
“We have plenty of work to do, but we have learned a lot of lessons this weekend that can be very valuable,” Horner said after the Dutch Grand Prix. “We need to make sure we use that; it is time to digest what happened here and try to bounce back in Monza.”
The shift in the front wing design landscape is a clear indication that the Dakar Rally has entered a new phase, with the competition between the top teams intensifying. As the season progresses, it will be fascinating to see how Red Bull responds to the challenge and whether it can reclaim its position as the dominant force in the sport.
