Formula E Berlin: DS Penske Drivers Vandoorne and Vergne Shine in Inaugural Race
Fresh off their strong performances in Monaco, DS Penske drivers Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Vergne arrived in Berlin determined to continue their success. And they did not disappoint, delivering a stellar showing in the first race of the Berlin E-Prix doubleheader.
The Berlin circuit, which has been a fixture on the Formula E calendar since the series’ inception, presented a new challenge this time around. The 2.3km layout featured 15 turns and a unique “runway” concrete surface, calling for careful management of energy and tire wear.
“This new track represents a challenge for both the drivers and the whole team, and I’m pleased that we were able to meet it,” commented Eugenio Franzetti, Director of DS Performance. “As the surface of this circuit is the most abrasive of the season, we of course always have to manage the energy of the batteries, but also the wear of the tyres.”
Vandoorne and Vergne rose to the occasion, with both drivers qualifying for the knockout stages. Vandoorne even reached the final, narrowly missing out on pole position to Mahindra’s Edoardo Mortara.
The race itself was a thrilling affair, with the two DS Penske cars leading the way early on. Teamwork and tactical nous were key, as the team navigated the tricky Attack Mode zone.
Despite some late-race drama and position changes, Vergne managed to secure a hard-fought second-place finish, while Vandoorne fought back to claim a valuable seventh-place result.
“It was a very intense race,” said Vergne. “I lacked a bit of energy but our pace was very good and I’m very happy with this podium. It’s all very reassuring for the future.”
With the second Berlin race set to take place this Sunday, DS Penske will be eager to build on their strong start and continue their push for more Formula E success.
