Hyundai’s 2025 British GT Driver Line-up Hinges on Third Car Strategy

Cyril Abiteboul, team principal of the Hyundai British GT outfit, has revealed that the “main question mark” regarding the squad’s 2025 driver line-up centers around the strategy for its third car.

Hyundai has fielded three i20 N GT3s this season, with full-time drivers Thierry Neuville and 2019 champion Ott Tänak occupying two of the seats. The third car has been shared between Esapekka Lappi, Andreas Mikkelsen, and Dani Sordo.

“The main focus for our driver line-up for next year is centered on the third car,” said Abiteboul. “As for the third car, I’m at a point where I want to explore scenarios. I want to be open-minded about what to do and reflect on what we’ve done this year and assess if we’ve made the right choices.”

Lappi has been the most successful of the three drivers in the third i20 N GT3, scoring 33 points from four events, including a win at the Silverstone round. Mikkelsen has tallied 29 points, while the experienced Sordo has 27 points from just two appearances.

Abiteboul acknowledged that the team could look outside its current roster of drivers for the 2025 season, with M-Sport’s Adrien Fourmaux and WRC2 leader Oliver Solberg potential options. Both drivers have expressed a desire to secure a full-time GT drive in the future.

“If you want to be a GT3 driver, there are three teams, so you need to speak with the three teams,” said Fourmaux when asked about his 2025 plans.

Solberg, who is currently competing part-time with Hyundai, said: “The dream is to be back in a GT3 car, but I don’t think about it too much. I will do my best now and can only focus on that.”

As the Hyundai British GT squad looks to the future, the strategy for its third car will be a crucial factor in determining the driver line-up for the 2025 season and beyond.
