WRC Title Race Takes Exciting Turn as Neuville Extends Lead Over Ogier

The battle for the 2023 World Rally Championship (WRC) title has taken an intriguing turn after a dramatic Rally Finland, which saw Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville extend his lead in the standings.

Neuville, the current WRC leader, now sees Toyota’s Sebastien Ogier as his main rival for the championship, despite the eight-time world champion yet to commit to the remaining rounds of the season.

“Number two, which is Mr Ogier at the moment,” Neuville said when asked about his main rival after Finland. “He may not feel it [like pushing for a title] but he has been there on the last rallies and he’s fighting for every single point. For sure [I’m thinking about him].”

The Belgian driver described his experience at Rally Finland as a “roller coaster of emotions,” ultimately resulting in a 27-point advantage over Ogier in the overall standings. Ogier, who is contesting a part-time campaign this year, has secured three wins and three second-place finishes from the six rounds he has competed in so far.

Ogier’s Comeback Bid and Rivals’ Misfortunes

Ogier’s victory at last weekend’s Rally Finland, where he claimed 24 points, has helped him climb above full-time drivers Elfyn Evans (Toyota) and Ott Tanak (Hyundai) in the championship standings. Both Evans and Tanak left Finland empty-handed after crashes, and now trail Neuville by 36 and 31 points, respectively.

With Toyota requesting Ogier to drive the remaining events – Greece, Chile, Central Europe, and Japan – the Frenchman is expected to make a decision on his championship push in the next two weeks.

    Neuville’s Adaptability and Determination

Despite struggling to find confidence behind the wheel of his i20 N during Rally Finland, Neuville’s clever approach and the misfortunes of his rivals ultimately paid dividends, earning him a significant points haul. The Belgian driver believes his team’s ability to adapt their strategy according to the challenging conditions was crucial in maintaining their championship lead.

As the 2023 WRC season enters its crucial stages, the battle between Neuville and Ogier promises to be an exciting one, with both drivers determined to claim the prestigious world title.
