British GT News: Hamilton Dominates at Silverstone in Thrilling Rain-Impacted Race

In a dramatic display of driving prowess, Lewis Hamilton claimed his ninth victory at the 2024 British Grand Prix, beating Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris in a rain-affected race at Silverstone.

Hamilton, starting from second on the grid, took the lead from pole-sitter George Russell (Mercedes) on lap 18 as the rain began to fall, and held off a late charge from Verstappen to take the chequered flag by 1.4 seconds. This victory marks Hamilton’s ninth triumph on home soil, cementing his status as a British racing icon.

The race was marked by several lead changes and strategic challenges as the unpredictable weather conditions played a crucial role. Norris, who had a superb drive to finish third, was followed by his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in fourth, while Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz rounded out the top five.

“It was an incredibly tough race out there, with the rain really throwing a spanner in the works,” said Hamilton. “But I’m absolutely delighted to take the win in front of the amazing British fans. This victory is for them.”

Verstappen, who finished second, praised Hamilton’s performance:

“Lewis drove a superb race, especially in the wet conditions. I gave it my all to try and catch him, but he was just too strong today.”

The result sees Hamilton close the gap in the drivers’ championship, with Verstappen still leading the way. The next round of the 2024 Formula 1 season will take place in Germany on July 21.
