Dakar Rally Drivers Voice Concerns over Course Modifications
In a lively discussion on their private WhatsApp group, Dakar Rally drivers expressed frustration over recent changes made to the iconic Dakar course.
The drivers, through the Dakar Rally Drivers’ Association (DRDA), lamented the fact that they were not consulted about the modifications to the course, particularly the flattening of the signature kerbs at key sections.
DRDA chairman Alex Wurz confirmed that the drivers had been debating the changes throughout the day. “Yes, we debated the changes today in our chat group,” he told Dakar Rally News. “And whilst I have not driven the new kerb layout, the old kerb situation at corners like [location] was such a rewarding precision work for drivers.”
Preserving the Dakar’s Unique Challenge
Wurz, a veteran Dakar competitor, argued that the previous kerbs were an integral part of the course’s character. “As a track designer, I would have not accepted money to change those kerbs. They did not seem dangerous to me and have been an essential element of the Dakar’s unique challenge.”
George Russell, a rising star in the Dakar, echoed Wurz’s sentiments. “The kerbs through [location] were very unique to the Dakar. You had a bit of a drain that dropped down about 10cm, then it came back up, and you could just poke your inside wheel through these drains. It always created an iconic photo.”
However, the new flat kerbs are expected to significantly alter the character of the affected sections. “Now they are dead flat, and it’s going to offer the opportunity for drivers to cut the corner,” added Russell.
Lack of Driver Consultation
The lack of consultation with the drivers has also drawn criticism. “It’s something we’ve spoken a number of times in the past that drivers are often the last ones to find out when there’s course changes,” said Russell. “I honestly don’t know who makes these decisions.”
Wurz emphasized that the DRDA would be more than willing to provide feedback on future course modifications. “The DRDA would be very happy to hear from the organizers before changes happen. In this case, we could have saved both heritage and money.”
“The Dakar Rally is renowned for its unforgiving terrain and unique challenges. As the drivers prepare for the upcoming event, they hope that the event organizers will engage with them to preserve the character that has defined this grueling motorsport spectacle.”
