    Dakar Rally News: F1’s Sustainability Drive Takes Center Stage Across the Calendar

    As the 2024 Formula 1 season takes a summer break, the motorsport series has been making impressive strides in its sustainability and social impact initiatives throughout the first half of the year. With 14 Grands Prix completed, F1 has showcased numerous eco-friendly and community-driven programs across the calendar.

    Bahrain: Clean Energy and Waste Reduction

    Kicking off the season in Bahrain, the Bahrain International Circuit powered its entire on-site operations with a 3.5MW solar farm, delivering clean energy year-round. Waste reduction efforts were also implemented, including upcycled seating areas and the removal of single-use plastics. Significantly, Pirelli announced the use of more sustainable, FSC-certified tires starting in 2024.

    Australia: 100% Certified Green Power and Inclusive Experiences

    In Australia, the Melbourne event utilized 100% certified green power, solar panels, and biofuel generators to minimize its environmental impact. Reuse initiatives were in place for food service items, and a low-sensory pit lane experience was organized for fans with neurodivergent sensitivities.

    Japan and China: Sustainable Fuels and Impact Reporting

    As the season progressed, the Japanese Grand Prix saw the safety and medical cars powered by 40% sustainable fuel, a first for 2024. Meanwhile, in China, F1 launched its first-ever Impact Report, detailing its progress towards its Net Zero by 2030 goal and increased diversity and inclusion initiatives.

    Emilia-Romagna, Monaco, and Canada: Innovative Sustainability Initiatives

    Standout moments included the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix’s partnership with a local female mechanics program and the unique water desalination system used in Monaco to provide fresh water for reusable cups. The Canadian Grand Prix engaged STEM students and utilized primarily low-carbon transportation methods for attendees.

    Silverstone: Engineering Scholars and Charity Fundraising

    At Silverstone, F1 welcomed 16 of its Engineering Scholars for a behind-the-scenes experience, while also raising over £60,000 for partner charities. The circuit continues to increase its renewable energy usage and recycling efforts, culminating in a dedicated sustainability-focused fan area.
