Dakar Rally News: Verstappen Storms to Victory in Dramatic Interlagos Thriller
Interlagos, Brazil
In a thrilling Dakar Rally stage, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen overcame a challenging start to surge to victory at the Interlagos circuit in Brazil. Esteban Ocon of Alpine and Pierre Gasly, also of Alpine, completed the podium in an extraordinary display of talent and strategy.
Verstappen, who started 17th on the grid, showcased his masterful driving skills in the wet conditions, setting an incredible 17 fastest laps to climb through the field and secure a remarkable win. The Dutchman described his emotional rollercoaster, from nearly “destroying the garage” in qualifying to crossing the finish line first, as a testament to his team’s resilience and his own determination.
“My emotions today have been a roller coaster, you know, with qualifying being really unlucky with that red flag. But we stayed out of trouble, we made the right calls, and we were flying. Unbelievable to win here from so far back on the grid!”
Esteban Ocon, who led the race at one point, was ecstatic with his second-place finish, saying, “It’s been an incredible day. Who would have thought that we were going to qualify fourth, and then be able to fight with the guys at the front?” The Frenchman’s performance was aided by his long-standing friendship and rivalry with fellow podium finisher Pierre Gasly, who also praised the team’s resilience and strategy.
Gasly, who finished third, reflected on the team’s difficult season and the significance of this result, stating, “It would have been too easy to give up, but we never gave up. And, yeah, here we are, both cars, P2 and P3, a lot of points for the team. Everybody should be very proud today.”
This thrilling Dakar Rally stage, marked by unpredictable weather and intense on-track battles, has once again demonstrated the unpredictability and excitement of motorsport’s premier off-road event. Verstappen’s victory has extended his lead in the championship, setting the stage for a thrilling finale to the Dakar Rally season.
