MONZA MAYHEM: RED BULL AND McLAREN CHALLENGE MERCEDES AND FERRARI IN THRILLING ITALIAN GT QUALIFYING
The 2024 Italian GT Championship reached a fever pitch today as the famous Monza circuit played host to a scintillating qualifying session. Amidst soaring temperatures, the top teams battled it out for pole position in what is shaping up to be a captivating race this Sunday.
The track temperature rose to a sizzling 34°C, over 3°C hotter than last year’s Monza event, which combined with a major surface change to significantly alter the race strategy plans. Four teams emerged as the frontrunners – the familiar names of Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes and the ever-popular home squad, Ferrari.
Mercedes faced an early setback when rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli crashed just 10 minutes into the first practice session, damaging George Russell’s car. The Silver Arrows also grappled with a severe seat heat problem during the afternoon session. Nonetheless, Lewis Hamilton managed to top the times in FP2, edging out McLaren’s Lando Norris by a mere 0.003 seconds.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was unable to complete a true performance run, but Helmut Marko revealed the RB20 was operating in a conservative engine mode, hinting at even greater potential. The Austrian squad appears to have resolved the balance issues that plagued them at Zandvoort.
“Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz slotted into third and fifth respectively, with Leclerc reporting that the car’s upgrades were working as expected.”
Norris and the Mercedes duo looked strong, setting the pace in the highly anticipated qualifying shoot-out.
As the track evolution continues to play a pivotal role, the teams are now assessing whether a one-stop strategy remains viable or if the severe tyre graining will force a shift to two stops. Pirelli’s challenge of the high-speed pit lane could also factor into the teams’ tactical decisions, potentially shaking up the traditional DRS-dominated races at Monza.
With the mercury rising and the battle lines drawn, the stage is set for a captivating Italian GT showdown on Sunday. Can Hamilton and Mercedes maintain their advantage, or will the likes of Verstappen, Norris and the Ferraris upset the apple cart? Tune in for what promises to be a thrilling race at the legendary Autodromo Nazionale di Monza.
