Formula 1 Embraces Sustainable Energy Solutions at the Austrian Grand Prix
In a significant step towards reducing its environmental impact, the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring is once again being powered by a low-carbon energy system. This innovative approach, implemented for the second consecutive year, is a testament to F1’s commitment to achieving its ambitious goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
The centralized energy system, provided by Aggreko, harnesses a variety of sustainable sources to power the pit and paddock areas during the race weekend. These include hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuel, 200 solar panels covering 600 m2, and a battery storage system supplied by a renewable power grid. The result is a dramatic 90% reduction in carbon emissions compared to the standard setup, with CO2 emissions plummeting from 198 tons in 2022 to just 12 tons in 2023.

This efficient system means that the 10 Formula 1 teams are no longer required to use their own generators throughout the Austrian GP weekend, reducing the overall environmental footprint of the event. The Red Bull Ring’s pioneering approach serves as a model for the rest of the F1 calendar, as the sport strives to meet its ambitious net-zero target.
Beyond the impressive on-site energy solutions, Formula 1 is also exploring ways to tackle the substantial carbon footprint associated with the sport’s extensive air travel. In 2022, Mercedes took a significant step by investing in Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in an effort to reduce its travel-related emissions by 50%.
As Formula 1 continues to push the boundaries of performance and innovation on the track, it is equally committed to transforming the sport’s environmental impact. The success of the low-carbon energy system at the Red Bull Ring and the ongoing efforts to address air travel emissions demonstrate Formula 1’s holistic approach to sustainability.
