Dakar Rally News: Formula E CEO Outlines Vision for Electrified Future
In an exclusive interview, Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds has provided insights into the all-electric championship’s strategic direction as it looks to guide the series to greater heights.
Dodds, who took on the top role almost a year ago, has been vocal about several key topics, including the recently released 2024-25 Formula E calendar. Approved by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council, the calendar features a packed 17-race schedule across 11 locations, spanning two seasons.
The campaign kicks off in Sao Paulo this December and will conclude in July 2025 with a return to London’s ExCeL. Notably, the calendar includes a mix of old favorites and new additions, with Tokyo and Monaco upgrading to double-header events due to their strong appeal.
Dodds emphasized Formula E’s identity as a “city racing series,” stating that less than 25% of the races will take place on permanent circuits. “It’s a real mixture of old favourites. Lots of the feedback we get from teams, manufacturers, from fans, is this kind of desire for hardcore calendar continuity,” he said.
However, the CEO acknowledged the growing challenge of accommodating the increasing speeds of the next-generation Formula E cars on tight street circuits. The introduction of the Gen3 Evo and the planned Gen4 machines, with nearly double the power and slick tires, could pose safety concerns on some urban venues.
“Formula 1 is introducing street circuits into their calendar and the cars are much bigger and more powerful than we are, so it can be done,” Dodds said, hinting at the series’ willingness to explore permanent facilities in strategic locations.
The American market remains a key focus, with the addition of the Homestead-Miami Speedway and ongoing discussions with several other major U.S. cities about potential race hosts. Dodds also expressed interest in further expanding Formula E’s footprint in China, where electric vehicle adoption is on the rise.
As Formula E navigates the balance between city-based racing and the technological advancements of its cars, the CEO’s vision suggests a continued emphasis on the series’ unique DNA while exploring pragmatic solutions to ensure the championship’s long-term viability.
