British GT Championship: Russell Seizes Pole at Silverstone

(British GT, July 2024) – In a thrilling qualifying session at the iconic Silverstone circuit, Mercedes driver George Russell took his second pole position of the 2024 British GT Championship season. The young Briton edged out his teammate Lewis Hamilton in a closely contested battle, securing a 1-2 finish for the Mercedes squad.

The session was marked by fluctuating weather conditions, with intermittent rain showers making tyre strategy a critical factor. Russell delivered a last-gasp effort, recording a time of 1:25.819 to edge out Hamilton by a mere 0.171 seconds. Lando Norris, driving for the McLaren team, finished third, adding to the British representation at the front of the grid.

“It was a challenging session, but the team gave me a fantastic car,” said Russell. “I’m delighted to take pole position here at Silverstone, in front of the home crowd. This is a special moment, and I’ll be pushing hard to convert it into a win tomorrow.”

Hamilton, the veteran of the Mercedes team, was pleased with the overall performance, stating, “George did a brilliant job, and I’m proud to see a 1-2 for the team. We’re in a strong position for the race, and I’ll be giving it my all to try and claim the victory.”

The session saw several dramatic moments, including a spin for Sergio Perez in the Red Bull, which ultimately resulted in the Mexican’s early elimination. Elsewhere, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was a surprise casualty in Q2, unable to find the pace to progress to the final shootout.

With the grid set, the stage is now set for a thrilling battle in the British GT Championship race at Silverstone. Fans can expect an intense fight for the race win, as the top teams and drivers look to claim glory on home soil.
