Motorsport Enthusiasts Rejoice: Red Bull Unveils the Stunning RB17 Hypercar
In a Highly Anticipated Reveal, Red Bull Introduces a Supercar Masterpiece
In a highly anticipated reveal at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Red Bull and renowned Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey have pulled the wraps off the stunning RB17 hypercar. This project, which has been in the works with Red Bull’s Advanced Technologies division, has undergone significant changes since its initial announcement in June 2022.
The most notable change concerns the engine, which is now a 4.5-litre naturally aspirated V10, a departure from the original F1-inspired turbo V8 configuration. Newey explained that the decision to opt for the V10 was driven by his desire to create a car that not only delivers exceptional performance but also offers an aural experience that harks back to the glory days of Formula 1.
“That last challenge was a fundamental change from my initial design because I wanted a power unit that was capable of developing 1000hp, but with a maximum weight of 150kg on the combustion side,” Newey told Motorsport.com. “A turbo V8 would have certainly given that. But obviously, it doesn’t sound as good as a naturally aspirated.”
The RB17 has recently entered its production phase, with the suspension elements currently being manufactured, followed by the chassis, gearbox, and engine assembly. Newey emphasized that the final product will be slightly smaller in length and width compared to the Goodwood reveal model, and the styling will be further refined.
While the RB17 is primarily a collector’s item, with only 50 units slated for production, Newey hinted that the car could potentially race in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, this would require a significant redesign, particularly in the aerodynamics department, as well as a different engine configuration.
As part of the RB17 sales plan, Newey has been attending select Formula 1 races, with his son Harrison โ a former BRDC Formula 4 runner-up and Asian Le Mans Series champion โ working as the customer manager for the car. Red Bull is offering its RB17 customers a comprehensive track program at various circuits, as well as a warranty of two years or 2,485 miles, whichever is reached first.
The unveiling of the RB17 has undoubtedly generated a buzz among motorsport enthusiasts, as it represents the pinnacle of Newey’s engineering prowess and Red Bull’s commitment to delivering an exhilarating driving experience. As the project nears completion, car enthusiasts eagerly await the opportunity to witness the RB17 in action, both on the road and potentially on the racing circuit.
